Why Can’t I Stop: The Overpowering Shadow Of Addiction
Though I personally have never experienced the highs and lows of addiction, I was forced to witness firsthand the tragedies it can create, as my best friend wasted away, allowing his addiction to valium, bars, and ecstasy to whittle away his chances of success and survival in his young adult life. At the age of twenty-one, he is currently sitting in the state penitentiary, serving a minimum ten year sentence after violating the three strike policy. Looking back on this experience, I came away with three major signs of addiction that I never noticed at the time of their occurrence; however noticing these signs in a timely fashion can help save an individuals’ life.
Addiction: Sign One
Though I use to partake in some of the extracurricular drug binges with my friends, I never let it become an essential part of my life, or stand in the way of my social connections; however, letting drugs become dominant in your day to day life is the first sign of addiction. After awhile of light drug usage, my friend soon planned whole parties with the intent of everyone being buzzed on pills and liquor, or even ecstasy. Instead of trying to enjoy quality time with friends, his evenings become transfixed on getting ripped, separating himself from his friends. Though drug use starts off light, it often develops into a centripetal force, causing the addicted to center everything in their lives on their drug habit.
Addiction: Sign Two
After he made drugs the center of his universe, and fell of the social scene with most of our friends, my best friend soon found himself falling into risky situations, just to sustain his drug lust. I remember watching him beat the hell out of a guy at a party one night, with a hefty reward of ten bars for his completed work. Soon, the actions became worse, as he eventually took up being hired muscle for local drug runners in our home town. After being involved with multiple assaults, the fuzz eventually got enough evidence to book him, and he experienced his first jail sentence. Sign number two is noticing when drugs lead to more extensive violent actions, as this shows increases in the power of addiction.
Addiction: Sign Three
Sign three is the hardest to deal with, but it always happens at some point in time with most cases of drug addiction. After m

y friend dealt with two jail sentences, and multiple stints in rehab, it seemed that he was gaining control over his problem; however this was far from the case. Will watching the game with me one night at my apartment, my best friend stole two of my credit cards from right under my nose. I never would have imagined he would betray me, but betrayal is sign number three, and represents the most powerful point in the addiction cycle.
Though not all addicts are destined to turn out like my friend, noticing these key signs of addiction, and getting them help quickly could be the deciding factor that determines their future.
